From July 2025 through June 2026, join us for free matinees at the Seattle Art Museum. These films explore themes from art on view at SAM and bring ideas from the museum’s exhibitions, collections, and programs to the big screen. Check out SAM Films for all upcoming events and details.

The spring film selections are curated by Scarecrow Video and are related to Beyond Mysticism: The Modern Northwest.

Hilma
(Dir. Lasse Hallström, 2023, 1 hr 54 min)
Hilma is a richly crafted biographical drama that immerses you in the life and visionary spirit of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, a pioneering abstract painter whose spiritually charged work was largely unknown during her lifetime. The film follows her from early artistic ambitions through deep personal loss, spiritual exploration in Theosophy and séances, and the radical creation of abstract art long before it was recognized by history, highlighting her unconventional relationships and the mystical forces that drove her creativity. Portrayed in youth by Tora Hallström and in later years by Lena Olin, Hilma celebrates a woman ahead of her time, whose legacy reshaped the art world following the posthumous acclaim of her groundbreaking work.
