Members, experience Ai, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei in Mandarin with Lynn Li, the Frances Blakemore & Griffith Way Intern at the Seattle Art Museum. Li is a masterâs student in the China Studies program at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. She developed this special tour for members as part of her internship at SAM, with support from FOONG Ping, Foster Foundation Curator of Chinese Art.
In response to criticism that his work is all politics and lacks real art, Ai Weiwei famously remarked, âEverything is art. Everything is politics.â This tour traces the evolution of his artistic practice as a lens for examining some of the most turbulent moments in modern Chinese history. It explores the entanglement of personal experiences and broader historical forces, revealing how deeply authority can shape individual life and how art can function as a powerful tool of resistance.
